I’ve been fighting what I think is bronchitis for the past week now. Not only is it terribly annoying, but I somehow need to continue to function and keep doing life. I almost went out to buy a few cans of Lysol hoping to fumigate our house of these germs. Knowing that would go against my love for natural cleaning, I made up my favorite DIY disinfectant spray. Just got this new spray bottle from Grove and I had everything on hand, it was way easier than going to the store.
Here’s all that I used:
1 cup vinegar
1 cup water
25 drops each lemon + tea tree oil (i often use lavender as well)
Combine all of the ingredients in a spray bottle and shake.
They’re my favorite source for a wonderfully curated collection of cleaning supplies and such. It brings me joy that they’re naturallly and sustainably minded.
A note on vinegar: while the smell is strong, it fades quickly and actually is a deodorizer. Don’t be afraid to use vinegar, it’s a natural disinfectant and it has a lot of amazing uses. It’s super cheap to boot. Even if you don’t have essential oils, you can still use just the vinegar and water.
A note on essential oils: many oils have antibacterial properties, my favorite one for this being tea tree oil, even though my husband doesn’t care for the scent. It works incredibly well. Lavender, eucalyptus, bergamot, peppermint, lemongrass, and oregano all work well for this too. I like to switch it up every now and again.
You can use this spray for just about anything and that’s what I’m doing, spraying down the entire house. You can also use this as a multi-purpose spray, which is what I most often do.
A note about this spray bottle: i love it. one, it’s glass which feeds my hatred of plastic. and another, the spray. it’s fine enough to spray on furniture and fabric and doesn’t leave spots.
Let me know if you end up making this diy disinfectant spray!
